Practice The Fundamentals

What’s the equivalent of practicing free throws for a creative profession? What about a pushup? Or doing a few laps around the track or in the pool?

In sports, athletes are often told, and then forced during practice, to work on and master the fundamentals. That way, when it’s game time and the pressure is on, they have the muscle memory and the confidence to execute those fundamentals perfectly, whether it be a layup, a five-foot putt for birdie, the 20-yard field goal, or the perfect backstroke.

What are the fundamentals for your field? Writing a scene? A chord progression? Pulling focus? The way you extend your hand or leg?

The principle of mastering the fundamentals is true across disciplines. If you’re ignoring the fundamentals, how can you be counted on the when pressure is on you to perform?
